FACTS & FIGURES.

WHAT IS SASSO SAN GOTTARDO?

Once constructed to defend the country and a top-secret location – nowadays it is a unique place for excursions into the legendary heart of Switzerland.

In the tremendous caverns of the former fortress, “Sasso da Pigna” on top of the mysterious Gotthard pass, an unrivalled museum has been created, now called “Sasso San Gottardo”. It represents one of the largest and therefore one of the most impressive, underground defensive fortifications in Switzerland.

After its declassification in the summer of 2001 the foundation Sasso San Gottardo took ownership and opened the fortress to the public in 2012. More than 100 000 people have discovered the heart of Switzerland after the fifth season in 2017.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE SASSO SAN GOTTARDO?

Located deep in the tunnels and caverns of the Gotthard massif – inside the casemates, ammunition stores and troops’ accommodation – contemporary history may be experienced at close range. It feels like the soldiers could return at any moment. In addition to visiting the Gotthard experience, you can see these additional exhibitions:

  • Crystal World: the largest crystals ever found

  • The Magical Chamber

  • Redoubt: the paintings you have to hear

  • A multimedia installation explaining the importance of Ticino during World War Two

You can shuttle between the historic fortress (Sasso da Pigna) and the Gotthard experience with an underground cable car (Metro del Sasso).

WHERE IS SASSO SAN GOTTARDO LOCATED?

The Gotthard pass is located on the road between Airolo (Canton of Ticino) and Andermatt (Canton of Uri), right in the heart of Switzerland.

The entrance to the fortress Sasso San Gottardo is located 300 meters behind the Hospice and leads into the Gotthard massif. In the midst of the mountain, our guests will leave all the distractions of the modern world behind.

Sasso San Gottardo can be reached in around two hours from Zurich or Milano and is therefore not only in the heart of Switzerland but also in the heart of Europe.

More than 1 million people travel over the Gotthard Pass during a six month period. Sasso San Gottardo can easily be reached by car, motorcycle and public transport which includes a regular bus route. The Swiss Federal Railway (SSB) offers attractive combination tickets for your visit.
